Learn the lingo–financial terms simplified: With the media’s focus on the financial markets and what’s happening on a day-to-day basis, understanding the terms being used may help you make better decisions. Here are a few key terms/definitions:
-
- Investing: Putting money into assets like stocks or bonds with the goal of making more money than you started with. It can be a helpful way to build a solid financial foundation over time.
- Stock market: A financial marketplace where you can buy and sell shares of public companies. People generally invest in the stock market with hopes of earning more money on their investments.
- Bonds: Bonds are like IOUs from companies or governments. When you buy one, you’re lending money. In return, you get periodic interest payments and your initial investment back when the bond matures.
- Compound interest: When interest you earn in a savings or investment account earns interest of its own. So, you earn interest on both your initial balance and the interest that's added to the balance over time.
- Volatility: A roller coaster of ups and downs in the money world. It measures how much an investment's value fluctuates, offering opportunities and risks for investors.
You can snack on more common financial terms by downloading Fidelity's Financial Capability Month calendar that was used throughout April.
Investing involves risk, including risk of loss.

More Support Resources from our EAP
As we celebrate well-being together this May, look to the additional support resources from Magellan Healthcare. This month, Magellan is identifying the mental health need at every age/stage (see chart below). Understanding and prioritizing what matters most at each stage can help you better manage stress, build resilience, thrive, and maintain meaningful relationships along your well-being journey.
Age/Stage | Mental Health Needs |
Children (age 0 to 12) |
Emotional Security and Healthy Attachments |
Adolescents and Young Adults (age 13 to 25 |
Identity, Social Support, and Coping Skills |
Adults (age 26 to 64) |
Work-Life Balance and Stress Management |
Older Adults (age 65+) |
Social Connection and Cognitive Engagement |
See Magellan’s flyer for more details regarding these mental health needs.
And, here are a few more resources to leverage from Magellan as you “Celebrate Well-Being” at MDLZ:
- A mental health activity: What makes you resilient? Discover your strengths and how they build resilience through this Activity.
- Chart out the past challenges you’ve faced at different life stages;
- Identify the strength you used to overcome each challenge;
- And then jot down how each strength supports your well-being today and how you foresee it helping in the future.
- Additional webinars from Magellan:
- Visit the Employee Assistance Program (EAP) page for more information on May’s scheduled webinars and monthly newsletter.
Remember, for confidential assistance at any time, call Magellan at 1-800-327-4581. Or, visit the Magellan Healthcare website.
